The family was returning to Pune after a four-day Tirupati and Mysore trip. The SUV in which they were travelling rammed into a lorry when the lorry driver applied brakes suddenly. Four people who were grievously injured have been shifted to a hospital in Bangalore.

Police have identified the dead as Raghunath (50), Revati (45), Nasik Navali (20), Shrutika (5), Shruti (1), Tanaji (25), Reshma (25) and Pratamesh (19). The family hailed from Wankhede near Pune.

The injured are Kiran Javadekar (driver), Kiran More, Ramesh Chougle and Pushpa Chougle.

Police said Raghunath’s family was returning to Pune via Tumkur. The RTO officials signalled a lorry to stop which was moving ahead of them, for inspection. The SUV rammed into the lorry, when the driver immediately applied brakes. Such was the magnitude of impact that the SUV was completely mangled and police had a hard time in extricating the bodies some of which were mutilated beyond recognition. The injuredhave been admitted to hospitals.
