The election of a new chairperson for the Legislative Council will be held at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi on December 12, with alliance partners Congress and JD(S) vying for the coveted post.
The Congress is said to be keen on nominating senior leader S R Patil for the post. The JD(S) is learnt to have asked for the post as a quid pro quo for having supported the candidature of Congress’ K R Ramesh Kumar as the Legislative Assembly speaker.
The JD(S) wants to nominate its senior leader Basavaraj Horatti, who is currently the pro-tem chairperson. Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Siddaramaiah is said to be pushing for Patil for having helped him defeat BJP warhorse B Sreeramulu at Badami in the Assembly polls.
