Former vice chancellor of Mangalore University M I Savadatti said on Thursday that it is high time for teachers to introspect on wrong practices in teaching and find a solution at the earliest.
At the 150th Foundation Day programme of the University College organised at Ravindra Kala Bhavan here, Prof Savadatti said there is a lack of inspiring teachers to foster and build leadership today. "We are not teaching to help students become a good human being or a good citizen. A good leadership can bring some change. Along with research, undergraduate teachers should focus on teaching," he said.
He said teaching profession is nothing, but continuous learning. One who does not read is unfit to be a teacher, he said and added that every student should learn to live with dignity.
He hailed the growth of the college and hoped it will be a college with difference.
Former chief minister and alumnus of college M Veerappa Moily recollected that he had made up his mind to develop the college, which had helped him how to face the country, during his first visit to the college as education minister.
"Teachers should help students express their hidden talents. Expansion, inclusion and access to education are indeed important to achieve excellence,” he said.
Mangalore University Registrar Prof A M Khan said the university campus will become a Wi-Fi campus. The university will soon appoint 150 faculty members, plant 150 saplings in botany garden and will felicitate 150 achievers who are also alumni of the university. It will organise a job fair and a minimum 150 candidates are sure to get jobs, he added.
MLC S L Bhojegowda expressed concern about the commercialisation of educational institutions.
Former minister B Ramanath Rai recollected his days as a student in the University College. He acknowledged that the college had helped him emerge as a political leader.
In-charge Vice-Chancellor Kishore Kumar C K highlighted the rich history of the institution.
Prof Savadatti was felicitated on the occasion. Mayor Bhaskar K, Corporator A C Vinay Raj, University College Principal Dr Uday Kumar M A, former principal Narayan Nayar, senior professor Dr Kumarasubrahmanya Bhat, Dr Latha A Panditand Prof Sunanda U were present.
