Allegations of pilfering food packets supplied to anganwadi centres in Chamarajanagar raised a storm at the KDP meeting here.
The members alleged that the foodgrains weigh lesser than the actual quantity mentioned on the cover. The 25 kg pack weighs only 20 kgs by the time it reaches anganwadi centres.
The remaining five kg goes into the hands of the agencies, they alleged. Moreover, the pregnant women and malnourished children are not provided
foodgrains as recommended by the government, they complained.
While three kg of rice has to be distributed, only 50 per cent is provided. In many places, the anganwadi centres do not open on scheduled time. The committee formed at the anganwadi levels too have failed in their responsibility, they blamed.
Deputy director of district women and child welfare department Sheher Banu who replied said Balvikas committee has been formed for the maintenance of anganwadi centres. A meeting has been held with the deputy commissioner over the allegations of difference in measures of the food packages. The DC has directed to receive the supply in the presence of committee members. If any difference is found the agency is responsible and has to set it right, she said.
New building
The meeting also discussed the delay in construction of new building for anganwadi centres.
The government is ready to release funds for the construction, but the officials delaying the works citing non-availability of sites is not right. The places has to be identified first and no process in this regard has been done, alleged members G S Nitya and Chandrakalabai.
CEO Somashekarappa said there is opportunities to construct new centres under Suvarna Gramodaya scheme. But the funds are not being utilised in some villages and it has been directed to use the funds for road and UGD works,
Fluoride content
President Nagashree said that there is fluoride content in the drinking water in many villages in the district. She urged the health department and panchayat raj engineering division officials to inspect and submit a report.
As there is depletion in water table, drinking water problem is on the rise. The residents too have lodged a complaint on the fluoride content in drinking water, which will have a drastic impact on their health.
