A village steeped in history
Many historical places in Uttara Kannada district are yet to get proper public attention. One such village whose history remains unknown is Bedsgav in Mundgod taluk. Inscriptions and hero stones (veeragallu) found in the village throw light on the rule of king Bijjaladeva who lived in 1163 AD.
According to an inscription, Bedsgav village was called as ‘Bedasagame’ in ancient times. Local Boppeswara temple was constructed in the period of Bijjaladeva. The chalukyan style temple has beautifully carved pillars with artistic designs. It has also a navaranga, a mukhamantapa and a garbhagriha. The temple has been destroyed over time due to the vagaries of nature.
Many herostones are located in the village. A 12th century herostone seen here is dedicated to a valiant soldier Kuppugauga who died in the battle field. Statues of Saptamatrike, Mahishamardhini, Kartikeya, Veerabhadra and Vishnu are carved in a temple called Paradeshada gudi.
Another place of worship called Ramalinga temple is now protected and renovated.
A huge pond spread across 40 acres is a major water source for the village. Water stored in the pond is used by local people for agricultural activities. The village also consists of a sacred forest patch known as devarakadu. Many such aspects have made this village an interesting place for researchers. The archaeological department must develop and
protect these historical places which tell us the stories of many tiny dynasties and their rulers.
