Landslide on the National Highway 275 at Madenadu in the district has caused inconvenience to hundreds of passengers.

In the backdrop of incessant rain on Sunday night, there have been landslides in different parts of the Sampaje region.

The landslide at Madenadu blocked the road for the whole day. As a result, passengers travelling between Bengaluru and Mangaluru had a harrowing experience.

Several passengers were also caught in the middle of the road and had to wait in queue to move ahead on a narrow road.

All vehicles travelling from Madikeri to Mangaluru had to be diverted to the Shanivarasanthe – Hassan route.

The house belonging to Katakeri Lokesh collapsed following the heavy rain. The house belonging to M M Karumbaiah has been damaged at Srimangala. The house of Suresh has partially collapsed at Malethirike Betta in Virajpet. Several electricity poles have been damaged in Makutta resulting in disruption of power supply for the last six days.

There was also a landslide near a house at Tyagaraja Colony in Madikeri. The house belongs to Sahul Hameed.

Madikeri City Municipal Council member Ameen Mohisin said, “The residents of the Tyagaraj Colony are living in constant fear due to the natural calamities. The Municipality should consider the Colony as a sensitive area and allot additional grants to take up work to prevent such calamities.”

Napoklu and Bhagamandala, on the other hand, face threat of flood due to the torrential rain.

The water level at Triveni Sangama has increased drastically. The movement of vehicles on the Napoklu – Bhagamandala route has been stopped to prevent accidents.

If the rain continues as heavy as present, the Napoklu – Moornadu Road will also be inundated.

River Cauvery has been overflowing in Kottamudi. River Lakshmanatheertha has filled to the brim at Srimangala, Harihara, Balyamandoor, Kanooru, Kottageri, Nitturu, Balele, and Jagale Malluru.

The rainwater has also inundated the paddy fields at Kanooru, Kottageri, Balele, Kadanooru, Kadangamurooru, Bhethri, Hemmadu, Arameri, and Maithadi.

In the last 24 hours, Kodagu has received an average rain of 87.06 mm. The district has received 2,970.5 mm rain since January. In contrast, last year, the rainfall in the corresponding period was 1,368.14 mm.
