Rice and ragi are the major crops in the taluk and most of the crops in the fields are ready to be harvested. However, the extremes of weather and the incessant rainfall are preventing harvest. Farmers are forced to wait and watch the skies, hoping for a break in the monsoon before all their efforts go down the drain.
Destruction
Standing crops of ragi and rice are wilting under the assault of rain and the plant ears are lossing grain.
Farmers who have already cut their crops are unable to dry the harvest because of the wet weather. The harvested crop is soggy and is even sprouting, resulting in crop loss.
In fields where crops are yet to be harvested too, the crops are soaking in the heavy rains and the grains are falling off the crops.
Uncooperative weather
Gudarlahalli, Gundlahalli and other villages in Murughamalla hobli grow mostly rice, while Kaivara Kasaba hobli grows ragi as the major crop.
Since the hobli is situated in the valleys of the nearby hills, tubewells have good supply of water. This has helped the farmers reap a bumper crop, which is, however yet to become a reality, due to the rains.
At the start of the pre-monsoon showers, farmers looked up to the skies hoping for dark clouds and copious rain. When the skies answered their prayers, they ploughed the fields, sowed the seeds and even fought fiercely for supply of fertilisers.
Now, the farmers are crestfallen to find that their efforts are going waste.
