The Assam police have sought the help of forensic experts in probing the suicide of Shivamogga girl Nagashree S C, who hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her hostel room in IIT-Guwahati on September 12.
‘Engineering sucks’, this was the last sentence written by Nagashree in her death note, which was found in her personal diary at her hostel on the IIT campus at Amingaon in North Guwahati.
She had joined the course only one-and-a-half months ago. She committed suicide while her roommate had gone to attend her class. Sources at IIT said that the first-year BTech (Mechanical) student was found hanging by other inmates of the hostel Wednesday morning.
The Amingaon police, who have registered a case, stated they are awaiting the report from forensic science experts to confirm whether the suicide note was written by Nagashree herself. Though the police are yet to get the copy of the postmortem report, preliminary evidence points to suicide, they added.
Though preliminary probe indicated that she committed suicide, friends of her family and her relatives say it is hard to believe that Nagashree, whom they regarded as a valiant girl, was ‘tired of life.’
Subramanya Bhagavath, a family friend of the girl and a resident of Nagara in Hosanagara taluk, told DH that it is really hard to believe that she took the extreme step, as she always treated life as a means to reach her goals.
"She was highly courageous as she used to walk for 2 km from her home at Sooreghatta to the bus terminal passing through the thick forests. So, we are not in a position to admit that she committed suicide.”
Sources at IIT stated that the death of the highly talented student came as a shock not only to her family and friends but also to IIT staff. Nagashree had been selected for the institute’s volleyball team, they said.
