Speaking at the first World Konkani Cultural Convention at Nehru Maidan here on Thursday amidst a huge gathering, she urged the Konkani people to take steps to continue to forge cohesiveness and unity within the community so that its language and culture can flourish and prosper.
Terming the first world Konkani cultural convention as a ‘great step,’ the President was all praise for the Konkani speaking people. “They form one of the most diverse denominations of India, with many community identities and include Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Yet, they are bound by the common Konkani language,” she said.
Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva, who also hails from Mangalore, recalled the struggle and efforts of the Konkani people in including the language in the 8th schedule of the Constitution.
Stating that she is proud to be a Konkani woman, she regretted that of late the younger generation prefer to speak English than Konkani.
Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya, who participated in the programme on behalf of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, said that the State government aims to support all regional languages and culture. He received loud applause when he said that the month-long Konkani convention would get support from the government.
Governor Hansraj Bharadwaj in his speech was all praise for the artistes who presented a magnificent show for about 30-minutes depicting the rich culture and tradition of Konkani speaking people.
Devisingh Shekavath, Prafullatha Bharadwaj, CWC Member Oscar Fernandes and social activist Dolphy Prashanth D’Souza were present on the dais. Reception Committee Chairman Ronald Colaco welcomed the gathering while Maandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario proposed a vote of thanks.
On the occasion, 25 persons representing 25 Konkani organisations from around the world including the US, Portugal, Canada and Pakistan were felicitated by the President.The one hour show before the arrival of the President and the 30-minute show by 9 groups representing different communities and tribes enthralled the audience.
