He is survived by his wife Sumithramma and two daughters. Iyer was suffering from age-related diseases for the past few months and was admitted to hospital on July 4, from where he was discharged three days ago.
People from different walks of life, including Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, Janata Dal (Secular) leader P G R Sindhia and Congress leader R V Deshpande visited his Shankar Puram residence to pay their last respects.
His nephew performed the last rites at Chamarajpet cremation ground in the presence of a large number of people who had assembled to bid adieu to the departed soul. Iyer had served as a State minister for housing and urban development, Bangalore City Mayor, deputy chairman of Legislative Council and Member of Parliament.
Sindhia who was closely associated with Iyer said: “He was honest to his conviction and the ideals he believed in. He was affectionate and a highly cultured man who won the hearts of the people of Bangalore.”
