The residents of Maccheri in the taluk are waiting for the pure drinking water unit to start functioning.

The drinking water unit was set up to solve the drinking water crisis in the rural area of Maccheri. With the technique of reverse osmosis, pure drinking water was to have been supplied to the residents. The unit, however, is yet to start functioning.

The previous government had sanctioned 27 such units to Kadur taluk. Accordingly, the unit was set up near the Anjaneya Temple at Maccheri four months ago. The unit, however, is surrounded by weeds and the machines at the unit are gathering dust.

Although the unit has been set up, the authorities are not clear about the sources of the water supplied to the unit.

The mini water supply project supplies water to Maccheri only once in three days.

The local residents said, “A borewell was sunk 200 metre radius away from the pure drinking water unit. However, the water is not potable. What was the need for sanctioning a unit, without finding source of water?”

The situation is not different at Kedigere, Anchechomanahalli, Chowlahiriyooru, Bantaganahalli, and Chikkabasooru, which are the villages where the pure drinking water units were sanctioned.

K P Thammaiah, Rural Water Supply Department assistant engineer, said, “The gram panchayats have no measures to supply water to the units. The electrification work in a few units is also pending.”
