Church attack case: Mahendra Kumar acquitted

The local court here has acquitted Mahendra Kumar, former convener of Bajrang Dal, in the case pertaining to making inflammatory remarks over the church attack case in Mangaluru.

After the church attack in Mangaluru on September 14, 2008, Mahendra Kumar in a press meet at the Woodlands Hotel in Mangaluru, had justified the act. Hence, a case was registered against him by the Bunder police. The police had filed a charge sheet to the court after the investigation in 2009.

As many as 12 witnesses, including the then inspector H N Venkatesh Prasanna, had deposed in the court.

On September 14, 2008, Adoration Monastery in Milagres was attacked. Similar attacks had taken place in churches at Mangaluru, Bantwal, Belthangady. As Mahendra Kumar had justified the act, the then Inspector H N Venkatesh Prasanna, had arrested him.

Kumar’s advocate Rajesh Kumar Amtadi had argued that Mahendra Kumar had not called for a press meet to create hate between Christians and Hindus. He has great respect for Christians and had only opposed conversion.
