The Makutta road was in deplorable condition last year. Of the 16.5 km road, asphaltation has been complete for 14.5 km road. The work on seel coating is under progress.
The contractor has decided to undertake the work of two km road from Makutta police station towards Kerala after the monsoon. However, the road will be made motorable before the monsoon.
The road work was undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 28 crore. The work must have been complete by December 2009.
However, later, the contractor was allowed to complete the work by March 2010.
Owing to heavy rains and non availability of gravel and other technical problems led the authorities to extend time for the contractors.
The authorities had even warned to blacklisting the contractor and levying huge penalty of Rs 2.25 lakh if the contractor failed to complete the work. “In the next 12 days, the work on seal coating will be complete,” said PWD Assistant Engineer Yathish.
The work on seal coating to 9.5 km road will be started within two days. The road has 73 culverts and 10 minior bridges. Everyday, seal coating will be laid for 750 metre road. On a whole, it has been decided to allow the movement of vehicles as soon the work gets over,” he added.
In the meantime, former MLA A K Subbaiah paid surprise visit to the spot and expressed appreciation over the work.
He urged the forest department to trim the trees on either side of the road before the monsoon.
The state government had undertaken the work on the road on the direction of High Court at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore.
However, now the cost has been increased to Rs 28 crore. With the completion of the road work, it is convenient to go to Kerala via Kodagu.
