The family of a woman, who was killed when she fell into an unscientifically laid manhole, staged a protest with her body, in front of the Kalaburagi Mahanagara Palike here, on Tuesday.
Asha Shivashankar Katti, the victim of the accident and a resident of Bada Roza area, was riding a two-wheeler. She failed to notice the manhole in front of the Palike office and rode over it. The mishap occurred on Sunday night.
Though she was rushed to a hospital, she succumbed to injuries on Monday evening.
The protesters said, that the manhole was not only in the centre of the road but was jetting out of it, thus proving fatal to motorists. “The Palike is responsible for the death of Asha,” they alleged.
Kalaburagi Mahanagar Palike Commissioner Raghunandana Murthy visited the spot on Tuesday morning.
Murthy told media that the family members of the victim had blamed the unscientific manhole for the death of the woman. “An inquiry will be conducted in this regard, and action will be taken,” he added.
The traffic police told DH that following the commissioner's assurance, the protesters withdrew the protest and Asha's final rites were performed.
