The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) on Tuesday, officially started works pertaining to the widening of Irwin Road, which was pending for the past 20 years. It has been planned to take up the works during night time and also when the traffic density is less.
Four building owners have agreed for the road widening works and have completed the necessary procedures.
The works will be taken up in phases. Most of the building owners have agreed to the compensation of Rs 13,072 per sq ft. As soon as District-in-charge Minister G T Devegowda launched the works, earthmovers were pressed into service for demolishing portions of the buildings for widening the road.
MCC Commissioner K H Jagadeesh told DH that around 84 buildings have to be partially demolished to widen the road. This includes one mosque, Kalamma temple, Panchamukhi Anjaneyaswami temple and others. Except a few, most of them have agreed for clearing the buildings for the purpose of road widening. Hence, there will not be any problem, he added.
As the road is very narrow, there are possibilities of traffic snarls on the stretch. The alternative routes are yet to be decided. When contacted, ACP Mohan said he has not received any proposal for making arrangements for alternative routes.
If they receive it would be definitely considered, he added.
