According to sources, the Union had been “negligent” in checking discharge of untreated effluents to a drain thus causing air and water pollution.
“The Union has not responded to the notices issued by the Board. Hence we have recommended further action according to law,” B Rudresh, Environment Officer, told Deccan Herald.
According to the report of the Board, water used for production is not being discharged in a scientific manner. A foul smell engulfs the Union premises on Dharwad Road since untreated water is being let into the drain.
Public using the road had approached the Pollution Control Board seeking measures to check air pollution.
According to environment officers, the untreated effluent reaches the Navalur tank through drains. They said though a water treatment plant has been set up at the production unit, there are no technical staff to maintain the plant.
Earlier, the Board had directed the Milk Federation to raise the height of the chimneys at the production unit to 38 metre. The unit had coal-fired boilers with chimneys of 30-metre height. The problem was resolved as the boilers were shifted to LPG.
