Hitherto, model code of conduct came into effect during the conduct of the election process for parliamentary, assembly and local body polls.

The Election Commission (EC) took the decision on the recommendation of a sub-group of chief electoral officers from various states. “We felt that the model code of conduct should also be applicable for Council polls. We submitted our proposal and the EC has accepted the same,” State Chief Electoral Officer C S Suranjana told reporters in Bangalore on Monday.

The code of conduct will not be as stringent as that enforced during general elections, he said. Election for two seats each from teachers and graduates constituency to the Legislative Council will be held  next month. The code of conduct will come into effect for these polls once the calender of events is announced.
