Nanjangud won the throwball competition and Periyapatna taluk were crowned as the ball badminton champions.
Earlier, speaking at the inauguration of the tournament organised by PU education department and Badari Prasadji PU College, deputy director of PU education Krishnaiah opined that even though there is a shortfall in the number of physical education instructors in colleges, existing staff are making all efforts to give prominence to sports.
Krishnaiah said students participating in state and national-level tournaments would provide them with plenty of opportunities.
Assistant director of youth services and sports K Suresh said sports was essential to create a strong society. He said sports acts as a means to maintain peace at the international-level. Colleges from seven taluks of Mysore district are participating in volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, throwball and ball badminton.
Geetha Shishu Shikshana Sangha secretary Vanaja B Pandith, joint secretary Prathap Kumar, president M Jagannath Shenoy and others were present.
Dasara sports: Meeting ’morrow
A preliminary meeting of Dasara sports meet 2011-12 would be held at Chamundi Vihar Stadium in the city on September 5 at 4 pm.
According to a release, Mysore superintendent of police Manish Karbikar would chair the meeting.
The national-level Dasara sports meet this year would include a range of events such as athletics, gymnastics, volleyball, kabaddi, hockey, kho-kho, badminton (singles and doubles), basketball, handball, table tennis (singles, doubles), tennis (singles, doubles), football, ball badminton, swimming, throwball, body building, half marathon and taekwondo.
According to a press release issued by assistant director of the department of youth services and sports K Suresh, the presidents and secretaries of various sports clubs have been requested to participate in the meeting and give suggestions.
