Naveen's mortal remains preserved in Ukraine mortuary: CM Bommai

As soon as the shelling is stopped, attempts will be made to bring his body back to India, he said

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said Tuesday that the body of Naveen Gyanagoudar, the student from Haveri who was killed in Ukraine, has been embalmed and kept at a mortuary in the war-hit eastern European nation.

Bommai said he spoke with Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar about this. “Jaishankar said the body has been embalmed and kept in the mortuary. There’s shelling going on there and once it stops, the government will try to get the body. The Indian Embassy is also in touch with mortuary officials,” he told reporters.

Naveen, a medical student, was killed in shelling at Kharkiv, about one-and-a-half kilometres away from his bunker last week. He hailed from Chalageri in Haveri, a district Bommai represents.

According to Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority commissioner Manoj Rajan, the nodal officer for the Ukraine situation, a total of 560 students have returned to the state from Ukraine since February 27.
