Acharya Buddharakkhita, founder of the Maha Bodhi Society of Bangalore and its sister organisations, passed away on Monday evening at Buddha Vihara in Gandhinagar in Bangalore.
He was born in 1922 at Imphal, Manipur and, after participating in the Quit India movement in 1942, he renounced worldly life and was ordained a monk in 1949.
He was the senior-most Buddhist monk in India and started the Maha Bodhi Society in Bangalore, which gave rise to schools, hostels and hospitals. He also founded the Bhagavan Buddha University and Theravada Buddhism. He has written over 150 books.
The cremation will be held at 10 am on September 27 at Mahabodhi Dhammaduta Vihara at Narasipura village, Alur, in Dasanapura hobli.
