Jhatkaa.org has launched an online campaign as part of its Save Western Ghats project and create public awareness about the Kasturirangan committee report.
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Ecology and Climate Change, on its website, has issued the final notification inviting public opinion on demarcating ecologically sensitive areas as per the suggestions made in the Kasturirangan committee report.
Tania Devaiah, senior campaigner of Jhatkaa.org, said that the task envisaged to the Cabinet sub-committee for creating awareness about the Kasturirangan report, had not been carried out properly. “People residing in periphery of forest areas are not even aware of any such report. The report, which the State government has submitted to the Centre reflects the vested interest of certain influential persons. Through digital media, we want to draw the attention of the masses and seek their opinion. The report is online, people can go through it and comment directly at the MoEFCC website,” Tania added.
The team of members preparing the Kasturirangan committee report had visited the Western Ghats around three years back.
