MLA Raghupathy Bhat said that a proposal would be submitted to the government demanding the funds to develop the Malpe fisheries harbour.
Speaking after inaugurating the auditorium of the Kanni Fishermen Association on Monday, the MLA said that he would be convening a meeting of the fisheries department officials and fishermen leaders shortly. The decision taken at the meeting would be conveyed to the government.
The MLA said that to solve the problem of the fishermen, a delegation comprising the fishermen leaders will be taken to the chief minister. He also appealed to the fishermen and the associations to work in harmony and not to fight over petty issues.
Former minister Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurated the main building. He said that Rs 10 crore is released for the development of the Padukere beach. The construction works initiated is opposed by a section of people. However, the differences would be sorted out and the works would be completed at the earliest.
He said that funds have been earmarked to renovate the rooftop of the fish auction centre. The technical approval is awaited. Once it is received, the works will begin. Madhwaraj said that the fisheries minister Nadagowda has sought information over the fishermen and the fishing.
Kanni Fishermen Association honorary president Somappa Kanchan, social activist Ravi Bankerukatte, port cleanliness maintenance in-charge Sunder Poojary, engineer Sadanand Mendon and child talent Tanushree Pithrodi were honoured on the occasion.
