A gynaecologist at a private hospital was prevented from carrying out an illegal abortion of the foetus on the pretext of a caesarean surgery by the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC), district health officer (DHO) and District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) officer here recently.
The issue came to light when a woman participating in the city police commissioner’s phone-in programme on Friday. She accused the DHO of not registering any case against the private hospital facilitating the illegal abortion.
Mangaluru City Police Commissiner T R Suresh told the woman to file a complaint.
DHO Dr Ramakrishna Rao said the hospital was prevented from proceeding with the caesarean surgery. However, the woman, who wanted to terminate the seven-month-old foetus in order to travel abroad, was subsequently discharged from the hospital. Dr Rao said that a notice now will be issued seeking an explanation from the hospital.
Sources told DH that the woman delivered the child at another private hospital in city. It is not known whether the parents placed the new born baby for adoption or taking care of the baby themselves.
