Agriculture fields at many places in the taluk have been inundated as the water was overflowing from lakes.
MLA Y C Vishwanath visited places which were flooded due to rains. Farmers explained that Vishnusamudra lake, which is the third largest one in the taluk, did not brim for the past nine years. However, this year the lake was overflowing. Sufficient rains has brought happiness among farmers. But at the same time, it also brought distress among some farmers as their coconut and ragi plantations were destroyed.
Vishnusamudra, which is spread across 1,250 hectares of land, caters water to thousands of hectares of agriculture field in the taluk. Water in the tank is sufficient for three years, if it was filled to the maximum level, the villagers explained.
The MLA assured that the government will take initiatives to protect the tank, which supplies water to large area of agriculture fields. Action will be taken to construct retaining walls, he said adding that the engineers concerned will be asked to conduct survey.
