Addressing reporters on Thursday, RD&PR Minister Jagadish Shettar said that close to 3,500 km of road upgrading works would be taken up shortly, as the Centre had granted Rs 564.27 crore and Rs 868.50 crore under two different proposals.

The Minister said there was reprieve for Karnataka from the step-motherly treatment after Vilasrao Deshmukh assumed the portfolio.

“Till now, Karnataka had been ignored only because an opposition party is in power here. The State has been rid of the injustice thanks to Deshmukh who didn’t reject our proposals,” he said.

Shettar who toured Gulbarga, Yadgir and Bidar districts recently, said that the review meetings brought to light an acute drinking water problem. A State-level committee would review the situation in these districts once again in a month, and action would be taken against those who had failed to correct the problem.

He said that de-fluoride units would be set up across the State to ensure supply of quality drinking water, and an action plan would be drawn up at a meeting to be held on June 25.
