With the Detailed Project Report (DPR) already submitted to the State government, the Palike has identified 835 kilometres of storm water drains in the eight erstwhile CMC areas to be remodelled.

“We have identified all the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary SWDs to remodel them by creating sections and retaining walls in these areas,” informed a Palike official.
Most CMCs have a kuccha canal that carries the rainwater, which have been found wanting in times of heavy showers.

To ensure that these canals are streamlined to carry the excess rainwater, the BBMP will now be building these retaining walls and sections along all SWDS in the region.
While the plans will appear as a massive boost to the old CMC areas under the Palike, the project is estimated to take as much as three to four years for its completion.

Land acquisition
“We expect it to take at least three to four years, considering the land acquisition from owners who will have to part with their lands for this purpose,” said the Palike official.
Meanwhile, the core city of Bangalore awaits the release of funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) by the Centre.
According to Palike officials, the BBMP has renewed its projections for creating better SWDs in the City. “We had received Rs 643 crore as part of the JNNURM scheme to facilitate better SWDs for the core city. But now the projections have changed and we are asking for a total of Rs 950 crore in grants for Bangalore,” informed the official.
The BBMP is currently preparing a DPR that is under submission to the Government of India asking for the above said amount.
