A full-fledged shandy market has been constructed in front of Mount Rosary Church, at Santhekatte in Udupi.
The work on the market has been completed and is likely to be inaugurated shortly. The shandy was held every week near Santhekatte Junction on NH-66.
This crated traffic congestion, for the motorists traveling to Udupi and Mangaluru. With the construction of the market, the traffic congestion on the road will be a thing of the past.
The new shandy market will benefit both the sellers and customers. Earlier, the farm produce and other items were sold on the roadside itself.
The foundation for the shandy market was laid in 2018. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1 crore.
The plinth area of the market is 17,500 square feet, with designated parking space. There is also an arrangement made for the flow of wastewater.
Electricity connection, interlock and water connections have been provided to the market. Seating arrangements have been made for 85 people to sell their produce.
Assistant Engineer Durgaparasad said, “The shandy market will be handed over to the revenue section of CMC shortly.”
Sellers are happy over new shandy market. “The old shandy market was lacking basic facilities. It was difficult to sell produce during monsoon,” said a seller.
