A student suffered neck and shoulder injuries in a clash between two groups at Someshwara beach on the outskirts of the city on Friday evening.
The injured student has been identified as Shreyas Shetty (25), a native of Theerthahalli in Shivamogga district. He is a student of Institute of Fire and Safety Engineering located near Mahaveer (Pumpwell) Circle and is residing at his grandmother’s house at Bolara.
A police source said Shreyas is pursuing diploma in Chitradurga. But he discontinued studies and enrolled in the Institute of Fire and Safety Engineering.
Shreyas was in constant touch with a girl whom he had befriended in Chitradurga.
When he had contacted the girl over cellphone on Thursday night, a man received the call and threatened Shreyas of dire consequences if he does not stop calling the girl. The warning triggered a verbal argument between them and they decided to confront each other at Someshwara beach. Shreyas arrived at the beach with his friends Johnson and Hariprasad.
The trio got into a ugly spat with the group and in the melee, Shreyas was assaulted in the neck and shoulder with a straight razor. Immediately, he was shifted to a private hospital in Thokkottu. Ullal police, after registering a case, have launched a search for the miscreants.
