Speaking after inaugurating the district polio plus orientation Planning Meet and AIDS awareness and prevention seminar organised by the Rotary International District 3180 here, she said that even though not a single case of polio has been detected in the State since 2004, it is necessary to be cautious as this part of the State receives the majority number of migrants from other parts of the country.

Polio eradication programmes with follow up activities are taken by the government health department officials, she said.

Aids on rise

Udupi district is almost prone to the threat, to be categorised as red zone, when it comes to AIDS.

Nearly 1000 HIV positive cases are reported every year in the district. Unlike other districts like Bijapur and Bagalkot, there are several ways in which the virus is spreading rampantly in Udupi.  The concentration needs to be shifted.

Awareness ought to be created among the public regarding the disease and the consequences, she opined.  Rotary District Governor Dr K Ravi Appaji, National Polio Plus Committee Vice Chairman PDG Dr P Narayana, District Chairman of Polio Plus H J Gowri and others were present on the occasion.
