Mysuru: Three friends and final year engineering students from Mysuru who had come to a resort for a weekend, drowned in a swimming pool inside the resort situated in Ullal Police Station limits on Sunday.

City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal said the incident took place at 10.05 am at the Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road, Peribail in Someshwara village.

The deceased are Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar in Mysuru, Nishitha M D ( 21), from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli in Mysuru and Parvathi S ( 20), from Ramanuja Road, K R Mohalla, Mysuru.

The mishap occurred when they were playing at the swimming pool in the morning. They had reached the resort on November 16 and stayed there overnight. The resort is owned by Manohar.

Sources said that young women were swimming with the mobile phone's video camera turned on towards the swimming pool's water. There is a possibility that they drowned while moving towards the deeper area in the pool.

Commissioner said that all three young women had entered the pool at 10 am. While moving inside the pool, one of them entered the deep area and started drowning. To help her, two others went and drowned. In fact, all three did not know how to swim.

Agrawal said normally swimming pools in resorts have to adhere to safety conditions by providing life saving equipment, deploying life guards and mentioning clearly the depth of the pool. The preliminary investigation revealed that there was no lifeguard at the spot and the depth of the pool was also not mentioned at the spot. There are a few lapses on the part of the resort authorities.

During the investigation, the authorities at the resort said that there were seven employees at the resort. However, CCTV footage shows none rushing for help when girls were raising the alarm. It looks like not many staff were at the resort at the time of the incident.

Speaking to DH, Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan said that the resort will be sealed after police completes the mahazar process. All guests in the resort have been vacated. Steps will be taken to temporarily suspend the trade license and other licenses issued by the local body.
