Two persons were arrested for their alleged links to banned terrorist organisation IS in Shivamogga on Tuesday. BE graduates Maaz Muneer Ahmad (22) of Mangaluru and Syed Yasin (21) of Shivamogga were remanded in police custody till Sept 29.

The Shivamogga Rural police had registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention Act ) 1967 against Ahmad, Yasin and another person Mohammed Shariq (24) of Thirthahalli for plotting to carry out terrorist activities using weapons. They were found to have burnt the national flag.

While Ahmed and Yasin were arrested and produced before the court, Shariq is on the run and police are on the lookout for him. Ahmad has done his BE in Mangaluru and Yasin in Shivamogga.

Superintendent of police B M Laxmi Prasad told DH that prima facie they were found to be acting under the influence of IS and are accused of conspiring to commit a terror act by professing the ideologies of IS.

Assistant superintendent of police Jitendra Dayama discovered their IS links while investing a stabbing case.

The Mangaluru police had arrested Shariq and Ahmed in connection with a graffiti supporting terrorist outfits on the wall of an apartment building in Bejai in Mangaluru and old check-post near the court premises in 2020.
