Speaking to reporters in Bangalore, Maj Gen (Rtd) AJB Jaini, member of Governing Council of the organisation said the commission can look into issues pertaining to the welfare, pension and support of ex-servicemen.

At a press conference organised by the NRI Forum Deputy Chairman Ganesh Karnic, Jaini also urged the various state governments to utilise the expertise of 22 lakh ex-servicemen pensioners and eight lakh ex-servicemen non-pensioners in the country.

He also sought nomination of ex-servicemen to the Rajya Sabha and adoption of one-rank, one-pension policy. Karnic, an ex-serviceman himself, said an informal meeting of the association decided to seek a single point reference in all offices of deputy commissioners to attend to the work of ex-servicemen, inter-district transfer of posts reserved for ex-servicemen and medical facilities at the district level.

Vijay Diwas celebrated

The Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrated Vijay Diwas, in honour of the martyrs’ who made the supreme sacrifice while fighting the enemy during the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

To commemorate the occasion, a wreath laying ceremony was held at Headquarters  Training Command, IAF here.  The event began with Air Marshal K K Nohwar V M, senior air staff officer, Training Command, laying a wreath at the War Memorial on behalf of Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Brigadier P S Ravindranath, the Commander of the K and K Sub area and Captain(IN) Ganesh Srinivasan laid wreaths on behalf of the Army and Navy respectively.

Retired officers who also laid wreaths included Admiral O S Dawson, Air Chief Marshal F H Major, Air Marshal B U Chengappa and Maj Gen M C Nanjappa.  On December 16, 1971, the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and the para-military forces together achieved a historic victory over the Pakistani forces.

It was on this day that the largest military surrender after World War II took place, when the General Officer Commanding –in-Chief Eastern Command, Lt Gen Jagjeet Singh Arora accepted the instrument of surrender from Lt Gen A A K Niazi of Pakistan Army at Dhaka.
