A Mandya City Municipal council project has come to naught. A vegetable market that was constructed at a cost of Rs 15 lakh near taluk office has turned into a garbage dumping yard.
The market project was taken up as the old market near the railway station was in a dilapidated condition. The situation would worsen during monsoon with the vegetables being sold on the roadsides.
As many as 20 shops were constructed at a cost of Rs 15 lakh on the premises of taluk office, paving way for a new vegetable market. Several years have passed, but no vendor moved into the market and business continues as usual near the old market.
The vendors say they are not interested in shifting to the new market, as customers preferred to make their purchases at the old market itself. The market has now become a breeding ground for pigs and dogs and also a haven for illegal activities, complain locals. CMC commissioner Prakash has said that a blueprint was now being prepared to construct a new market at the old market premises to the benefit of the buyers, a decision which has not gone down well with the tax payer.
