The water storage at Baje dam may last for just five more days due to rapid evaporation.
Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) is contemplating to bring down the water supply quantity to 3 MLD from the present 5 MLD, sources said on Wednesday.
Presently, the CMC has divided the wards in to six zones and is supplying water once in six days.
Sources in the CMC said that in order to ensure that water is supplied till the region gets rain, the administrators are planning to decrease the hours of pumping of water from eight hours to five hours. Pumping of water from the waterholes along the the path of River Swarna had begun from May 5. Now, the water stored in those waterholes have also been emptied.
Three pumpsets have been placed at Manai and Bhandaribettu areas to lift the remaining water from waterholes to supply it to Baje dam.
Water is being supplied through tankers in the elevated areas where the piped water do not reach.
Udupi Tahsildar Pradeep Kurdekar, Udupi Taluk Panchayat President Nalini Pradeep Rao and others have already held a meeting to discuss on the water scarcity issue and plans are being chalked out to mitigate the water scarcity by deploying additional tankers to supply water, sources said.
