“I am aware of the problems being faced by domestic workers. Given the different working patterns, there is a problem in fixing the minimum wage for these workers.  As of now a sum of Rs 2,700 has been fixed for eight hours,” the minister said, while addressing a public meeting on the occasion of Domestic Workers’ Day here on Sunday.

The proposed Board will ensure protection of rights and social security for the domestic servants, he added. Before the meeting, domestic workers took out a march in the City to create awareness on their rights and dignity.

Their demands include recognition enactment of the Unorganised Workers' Bill in the State; a  separate board for domestic workers and  social security fund; enforcing minimum wages notification effectively and to have proper weekly offs, maternity leaves and grants for medical expenses; halt on trafficking of workers and to control the placement agencies through a system of licence, and to provide timely police assistance to protect them from the harassment and ill-treatment by their employers.
