Kannada activists staged a protest demonstration in front of deputy commissioner’s office condemning the state government’s decision to shut Kannada medium schools.
“Children from economically backward families in rural areas will be affected by the decision. Also, a urban student studying in government school in a city will also face inconvenience. The decision to close Kannada medium schools has no rationale,” the protesters said.
They demanded the state government not to accord permission to open private English medium schools anywhere in the state. The opening of new schools has become a business for capitalists. These institutions should also be denied CA sites in residential areas,” they said.
The protesters — led by noted Kannada activists Samskruthi Subrahmanya, P Mallesh, critic G H Nayak, writer K S Bhagawan, Rajashekar Kadamba, KSP district president Maddikere Gopal and others — also urged the government to derecognise private schools which lack basic amenities.
The protesters said the closure of government schools would only encourage private institutions, which are likely to charge more donation and capitation fee for admissions.
“A few vested interests in the government are hand-in-glove with private institutions in implementing such orders,” the protesters alleged and demanded for strict implementation of Right to Education Act in the state.
S R Sudarshan, M Chandrashekar, H Govindaiah, Thayuru Vittalamurthy, K S Shivaram, S Balakrishna and others were present.
