"The funding of the militants started the day militancy began in Jammu and Kashmir more than two decades ago," Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda said at a press conference here Monday afternoon.
"The militants have adopted different channels to bring in money. The money also came to them through trade across the Line of Control (LoC)," he said.
"The militants were also given money through electronic transfers... some money was brought by people directly. While some of the sources of the funding have been blocked, others are yet to be blocked as they remain undetected," he said.
He claimed that the state police had arrested some people in this connection. "We are on the look out for others who are involved in these illicit transactions," he said.
Khoda also claimed that the districts of Udhampur, Reasi, Jammu, Samba and Kathua were now "free of militancy" while some militants were operating in the hilly areas of Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban in Jammu region.
