Sreelekha, who retired from service in 2020 in director general of police rank, was given formal membership by BJP state president K Surendran at her residence in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

Sreelekha told reporters that she thought of joining BJP after the party leaders invited her. She also said that she was impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi government's development initiatives as well as BJP's policies.

BJP state president said that Sreelekha's experience as an IPS officer and her friends' network would be of much value for the BJP in its growth in Kerala.

Sreelekha, who is a 1987 batch IPS officer, had held many key posts and also penned many books.

Another retired DGP in Kerala, Jacob Thomas, had earlier joined the BJP, and former DGP T P Senkumar is close to RSS and other Sangh Parivar outfits.
