Thiruvananthapuram: The Sreepadmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, famed for its priceless treasure in its chambers, has been served a notice for tax dues for Rs. 1.57 crore by the central GST department.

The CGST notice was for tax dues for the last seven years citing various services like renting out of traditional dresses to devotees and sales of various items.

The temple authorities maintained that objections were already raised against the amount as various exemptions to worship centres were not considered while computing the dues. The taxable income of the temple would come to only around Rs. 16 lakh and tax for that amount was already paid, said temple sources.

The CGST officials had earlier carried out an inspection at the temple's office in this regard.
