Raisen: Six people were killed and 11 injured after a truck allegedly overtaking from the wrong side ploughed into a wedding procession in the Sultanpur area of Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district on Monday, a senior official said.
The procession had arrived from Anchalkheda in Hoshangabad district. The accident occurred at 10 pm near the Khamaria village, Raisen Collector Arvind Dubey told PTI.
The victims include labourers carrying lights as part of the procession, said Rajat Sarathe, the Sultanpur police station in-charge.
Five persons, including the groom's minor brother and labourers carrying lights, were killed on the spot and 25 others were injured, of which 11 needed treatments, an official said.
The truck initially hit the horse, which the groom, Vishram Singh Ahirwar (26), was riding, and one of his hands got crushed under the truck's tyre, he said.
The driver and cleaner of the truck managed to flee the scene after the accident, and a search has been launched for them, the official said.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced an assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased persons and Rs 50,000 each to the injured, Raisen Collector Arvind Dubey had said.
