Mumbai: A policeman was killed and another was injured in an incident of hit-and-run in Bopodi area of Pune in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased was identified as Samadhan Koli (42), a constable.

His colleague, Sanjay Shinde (36), a constable, was injured in the accident and is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.

The two constables were beat marshals and were on patrolling duties of the Khadki police station in the outskirts of the city.

The incident took place near the Harris Bridge off the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway. After knocking down the duo, the man on the wheels of the four-wheeler sped away.

The incident took place at around 2 am.

Later, some local villagers came to the accident site and alerted the police who rushed a team there. Both the constables were rushed to the Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune city, where Shinde was pronounced dead on admission.

The accused, Siddharth Raju Kengar alias Gorakh (24) has been detained and was picked up from his home.

Deputy commissioner of police Vijay Magar is personally overseeing the investigations.

The car involved in the incident has been impounded.

Pune police chief Amitesh Kumar spoke to senior officers after the incident and reviewed the situation.

“The accused has been taken for medical examination and test of alcohol in blood,” Magar said, adding that the necessary tests are being done at the Sassoon Hospital. “As of now, it appears that the vehicle belongs to the suspect’s friend,” he said.
