Pune: Former cricketer Salil Ankola's mother was found dead with her throat slit under mysterious circumstances at their house in the Deccan Gymkhana locality of Pune. She was 77.

Maya Ankola sustained a fatal injury to her neck, which is believed to be self-inflicted, according to initial reports.

In a post on Instagram, Salim Ankola offered tributes to his mother and shared a photo with a note - "Goodbye Mom”.

The body has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.

A team of forensic experts have also been called in to collect evidence from the site.

The CCTV footage of the house and the Prabhat Road locality of Deccan Gymkhana is being checked by the Pune police.

The medical history of Maya Ankola is also being checked by the police teams.

“Prima facie, it looks like the injuries are self-inflicted. However, we are probing the case from all angles," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sandip Singh Gill.

Salil Ankola (56) played one Test and 20 ODIs between 1989 and 1997. The fast-medium bowler later acted in films and TV serials.

In 2020, Salil Ankola was selected as the chief selector of the Mumbai Cricket Association. He was selector of the National team from January 2023 till August 2024.

Incidentally, Salil Ankola’s former wife Parineeta had died by suicide in her Pune home in December 2013.
