Mumbai: A woman drowned in an open drain when heavy rains pounded Mumbai and its suburban areas on Wednesday night.

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered a probe into the incident on Thursday.

The drowning incident was reported near the MIDC-SEEPZ area of Andheri East in Mumbai.

The deceased was identified as Vimal Anil Gaikwad (45).

The sudden rainfall, more than 250 mm in some places in a matter of a few hours, caught Mumbaikars unaware.

Waterlogging was reported from several places like Hindmata, Dadar, Kurla, Chembur, Andheri.

On Thursday morning, the water levels receded.

However, in Mumbai schools and colleges were given holidays as a precautionary measure.

The India Meteorological Department upgraded its orange alert for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts to a red alert for Thursday morning.

BMC’s Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani sought a report within three days time.

Meanwhile, three persons died in Thane district because of lightning strike.

The lightning strikes were reported from Shirgaon in Murbad, where a person died after lightening his house while a man and woman died in a quarry when lightning struck them in Kamba in Kalyan.
