Mumbai: A 21-year-old girl was gangraped and her male friend was assaulted by three unidentified men in the Bopdev Ghat area in the outskirts of Pune.
After the incident came to light, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi launched an attack on the Maha Yuti dispensation. The Kondhwa police are investigating the matter.
The girl is being treated at the Sassoon General Hospital in Pune city.
The incident took place around 11:00 pm in a poorly lit and secluded area. The police came to know about the incident around 5:00 am.
The duo were accosted by the three unidentified men. The girl was allegedly beaten up while her male friend was brutally assaulted after being tied to a tree.
“More than 10 teams deployed for the search of the accused,” Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma, who is personally overseeing the investigations.
Reacting to the incident, NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar said, “On one hand, there is the Ladki Behan Yojana and on the other hand, there are atrocities on women.
"On one hand, there is an attempt to provide financial assistance to women through the Ladki Behan Yojana and on the other hand, there is a lot of anger among the people due to the increasing atrocities on women.”
Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar said: “Ahead of Vidhan Sabha polls, the Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers are engaged in branding themselves as Bhai, Bhau and Dada. And on the other hand, in the last two days, shocking incidents of abuse of women have come to light in Pune.”
This was an apparent reference to Shinde, Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.
While Fadnavis is the state Home Minister, Ajit Pawar is the state Finance Minister and Guardian Minister of Pune.
“Unfortunately, it has to be said that Maharashtra is not safe for women. The government should arrest the accused and take strict action against them,” said Supriya Sule, the Baramati MP.
