Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old girl from Kerala, who was training to become an Agniveer, died by suicide at INS Hamla, an Indian Navy shore base in Malad in the outskirts of Mumbai.
The deceased was identified as Aparna V Nair. She was found hanging in the hostel room.
She was training at the facility for the last 15 days. The Malvani police station has registered an accidental death report (ADR) and investigations are in progress.
No suicide note has been recovered from her room so far.
The Indian Navy authorities and Mumbai Police are carrying out investigations from various angles including personal issues that she possibly had.
In an official statement, the Indian Navy said: “Regret to inform you of the unfortunate incident of the unnatural death of Aparna V Nair, Agniveer Logistics (F&A), 20, at INS Hamla, Mumbai on Nov. 27. An enquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident. Indian Navy extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”
This is the second incident of an Agniveer dying by suicide - on 11 October, Amritpal Singh (19), died not self-inflicted gun-shot injury while he was on sentry duty.
