Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Saturday apologised to kin of victims at Egra, for the explosion at the illegal firecrackers unit, which had claimed several lives. The incident had occurred on May 16.

“With my head bowed down, I seek forgiveness for the incident. If I can be of any help, do let me know,” she said, while addressing the affected families and locals, during her visit to the region.

Expressing sorrow, Banerjee said that the incident had awakened “us” (hinting at the administration).

“We have decided. We will receive a report in the next two months. We have formed a committee led by the Chief Secretary,” she said, adding that a plan is being taken up where clusters can be put in place for fireworks units.

This in turn would curb operation of illegal units, protect jobs and lives of workers, and would avail opportunities for manufacturing green crackers, instead. The clusters will be away from the crowded habitations.

Banerjee said that while some are politicising the incident, she was not there to indulge in politics, but to facilitate help. The Chief Minister announced Rs 2.5 lakh as financial assistance, and a homeguard’s job to a member, from each of the affected families.

Recalling police’s quick trailing and arresting of people linked to running of the illegal unit, Banerjee asked locals to be vigilant, and report to police officer in-charge, concerned, if any such unit operates. In case the officer doesn’t react, then he will be replaced in two days, she cautioned.
