Two days after being injured in an alleged attack in Nandigram, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was discharged from the hospital on Friday. Doctors attending to her at the government-run SSKM hospital discharged her after her condition improved and she repeatedly requested them to be released.
The Chief Minister was brought out of the hospital on a wheelchair with a plaster on her injured left foot and with specially made sandals. She got into her car with the help of her security personnel and Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Subrato Bakshi.
It took her considerable time to get out of the wheelchair and get into the car. She greeted TMC workers and bystanders with folded hands before getting into the car and reaching her home in Kalighat in South Kolkata.
The Chief Minister’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim were present at the hospital.
Doctors attending to her said that even though she was responding well to the treatment they wanted to keep him under observation for 48 hours but agreed to discharge her due to her repeated requests. They also said that the Chief Minister was advised to come back for another round of check within a week.
“After removing the plaster we saw that the hematoma on her foot has reduced considerably. The injury on her left foot and ankle has shown major signs of improvement. Her foot has been plastered afresh. Seeing her general and local condition, all the members of the medical board advised that she be kept under observation for 48 hours. But due to her repeated requests she is being discharged,” said a doctor at the hospital.
