Guwahati: A doctor who was abducted by Meitei armed persons on November 22 from Imphal for ransom was rescued from a farmhouse on Sunday, Manipur police said on Tuesday.
Police further said five persons were also arrested from two different places and arms and ammunition were seized from their possession.
The victim, identified as Kh Nabakeshore, a medical officer, was abducted from Langthabal Kunja Awang Leikai in Imphal West on November 22 morning and the abductors later demanded ransom and threatened to harm him if their demand was not met.
Acting on information, an operation was launched by police and the victim was rescued from a farmhouse in Lamdeng under Lamshang police station on November 24. Four persons, Wahengbam Ramananda, a member of Kangleipak Communist Party (MC), an insurgent group, Wahengbam Usharani, Naoraibam Joyshankar and Leichombam Bipin Singh were arrested during the operation. A 7.65mm pistol, one .32 pistol and ammunition were recovered from them, police said in a statement.
Police on Tuesday arrested another accused, Paonam Shamungou alias Pintu and recovered two pistols, one revolver and ammunition. .
As the conflict involving the Meitei and Kuki communities have continued since May last year, Imphal Valley has witnessed several cases of abduction and extortion by the Valley-based insurgent groups. Police have arrested nearly 100 cadres of several insurgent groups and criminals on charges of such cases.
