A stretch of a road in Imphal in Manipur will soon be renamed after M C Mary Kom, Indian woman boxer, who recently won the Women's World Boxing Championship for the sixth time.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh announced this while conferring Mary Kom with 'Meethoi Leima' (exceptional lady) title at a function at Khuman Lampak sports complex in Imphal recently.

The road leading towards the National Games village, at present, is named Imphal West DC Road and will soon be renamed as MC Mary Kom Road. The road also leads to the Olympic bronze medalist boxer's residence, where she lives with her family, including three children.

Manipur government also handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to Mary Kom, who is now practicing hard for winning a gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Manipur chief minister said people of the state would continue their support to achieve her dream of an Olympic gold.

Thanking the people of Manipur for the love and support, Mary Kom advised the young players to be disciplined and concentrate only on regular practice. "Dream big and practice hard, nothing else can stop you," the boxer said at the function on Tuesday.

Apart from playing in all major international tournaments, Mary Kom is running an academy in the outskirts of Imphal, where many economically weaker young talents are provided boarding and training facilities free of cost. "My dream is to see more talents coming out of Manipur and rest of the Northeast and do best for the country," Mary Kom said, days after her victory in the recent Women's World Championship.
