"The reason for my being in Lucknow today is that the NCW is here to get an action taken report from the state government on various atrocities that have been taking place here, and we were to hold a meeting with the government. The government has refused to cooperate with us and has refused to arrange for a meeting today," Abrar told reporters.
Responding to Chief Minister Mayawati's charge against the NCW of acting as a front for the Congress, Abrar said: "The atrocities against women in this state have been increasing. This isn't something that only I am saying. It is visible to everyone. Instead of levelling such wrong charges, Mayawati should appreciate the work we are doing."
"She should question the state commission as to why they are not doing anything to help the situation in the state. If the state commission had done its job, then the national commission would not have to be here," Abrar added.
There have been a spate of crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh. One of them was against a minor Dalit girl who was blinded by two boys when she resisted their attempt to rape her. Talking about the rise in crimes against women in the state, Abrar said: "The only reason that all these atrocities are taking place is that the police department and administration are lax in their approach on the matter. Even Mayawati has admitted to this fact. It is not that the chief minister is not aware of the situation.
She is very aware of it."
"I request Mayawati to look into the matter of bringing the situation under control instead of trying to keep a watch on what an organisation or machinery is doing," she added.
